The Hotel Garden – La Zoologie
The garden of La Zoologie hotel in Bordeaux is a real escape space. Proud heir to the naval history of
Bordeaux, many plants from distant lands have arrived in the former great commercial port.
Thus, the garden is a call to discover these exotic plants and the history of their integration into our
culture and gardens. You can also discover the great scientific expeditions, the Zoology Institute
being a former place for the study of natural sciences.
With a terrace with a footbridge leading to the garden, you can come and enjoy the sun and the lush
garden in summer. Decorated with a green wall on the Botany wing and laminated in several levels
reminiscent of the old amphitheater. You will find yourself out of the way by the different islets.
La Zoologie building history
The Institute for Zoology was built in the beginning of the 20th century between 1900 and 1903. The project was conducted by a renowned architect, Ernest Lacombe, who participated to many important projects in Bordeaux, such as the city library ‘Mably’, the Chamber of Trade and the grands magasins known as the ’Nouvelles Galeries’. He also played an important role in the renovation of the ‘Grand Theatre’ in Bordeaux.
When the Institute of Zoology opened in 1903, the building had two parts, one for the sciences in zoology and another one for the sciences in biology. The building also hosted a large amphitheatre which was knocked down later on. The ground floor was then elevated from the street level in order to isolate the laboratories.
The main building hosted a museum, a large room for science experiments and laboratories. In the corner building there was a large amphitheatre of 60 seats, more laboratories and another experimental room.
The project was conceived as the starting point of the larger opening of the Cours Barbey in Bordeaux. Its architecture is typical of the end of the 19th century mixing different materials such as stone, bricks, iron and glass, making it a landmark building in the architectural history and academic buildings in Bordeaux.
A unique hotel in the heart of Bordeaux
From your Design hotel La Zoologie in Bordeaux, you can easily discover by foot the city registered on the UNESCO world heritage since 2007. The classical and neoclassical architectural features of the city have encountered next to zero change within the past two centuries -with the exception of few essential but discrete planning features.
From La Zoology hotel, you will find yourself directly in the historical centre of Bordeaux. It is an ideal start to meet the wealth of Bordeaux architecture.
You will be able to discover the Tour Pey-Berland, the Cathedral Saint-Andre and then the Rohan Palace, a former archiepiscopal palace that now hosts the Beaux-Arts.
You can continue toward the Dijeaux gate, opening onto the Gambetta square to reach then the Grand Theatre. Following the Cours du Chapeau Rouge, you will meet the royal architectural standard strolling toward the Place de la Bourse, the landmarked representation of Bordeaux.
Before reaching back to La Zoology hotel, have a special photographic approach of the Place de la Bourse, a 18th century masterpiece that has transformed the city in its whole core. The famous water mirror has inspired modernization projects in Lyon and Paris, and is a key symbol of the past modernist project of Bordeaux. To wrap up your opening journey, leave the Medieval quarter Saint-Pierre by the Cailhau gate, a Renaissance piece in honour of the King Charles VIII in 1494.
If you wish to continue further, you will find the Public Garden, the Pont de Pierre and the large square Quinconces.
